“Our mission is to empower girls of all backgrounds through music education and performance”
Girls Rock MKE is a summer day camp for girls aged 8-16. Our 2017 camp sessions will be held June 19-23 and July 31-August 4 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Zelazo Center in Milwaukee. The showcases are held on the following Sundays after each camp (June 25 and August 6, respectively) at Turner Hall Ballroom! Registration for the 2017 camp sessions will open in March. Hope to see you there!

Our mission is to empower girls of all backgrounds through music education and performance. We are dedicated to creating a positive environment that builds girls’ self-esteem and fosters leadership, life-skills development, and independent thinking while cultivating a supportive community of peers and mentors that demonstrate it’s ok to be who you are!
Our mission and our goals align with the Girls Rock Camp Alliance. GRCA is an international coalition of organizations whose shared mission is to empower girls and women using the tools of music. We are in the process of applying to be a member of GRCA. The core values of GRCA are the following – we will adopt these same values:
-
We value the power of music as a means to create personal and social change
-
We value efforts that actively expand opportunities for girls and women
-
We value positive approaches to fighting sexism
-
We value integrity, honest and respect
-
We value appropriate sharing of resource, cooperation and collaboration
-
We value using our collective voice to further our mission
-
We value diversity

At camp girls will form a band, learn to play an instrument, write a song and at the end of the week perform in a rock and roll showcase at a local venue. The objective of the camp is to give girls a creative outlet, a voice, and an opportunity to be surrounded by other creative people in an accepting environment. Writing and playing a song together brings a sense of accomplishment and leads to a sense of empowerment. It takes an act of bravery to get up on a stage!
During the week girls also attend workshops that are designed to develop strong life-skills and to empower them as young women. These classes may include:

-
Print/Flyer Making
-
History of Women in Music
-
Button Making
-
Songwriting
-
Image and Identity
-
Team Building
-
Conflict resolution
The bands the girls form will be made up of a singer, guitar player, bass player, drummer and keyboardist. Camp is held at the Helene Zelazo Center on the campus of University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. Campers must be able to attend all days of the camp as well as the Sunday Showcase.
